Blackjack is a game of chance played with cards. It is the most popular casino game and can be played in casinos worldwide. The basic goal of the player is to beat the dealer’s hand by having a card total value that is closer to 21 than the dealer. The player can win if his hand exceeds the dealer’s without going over 21, but if he does bust (goes over 21) then he loses his bet. Players can use a variety of strategies to help them win. One strategy is called card counting and it is based on keeping track of the dealer’s cards. This can give the player an advantage of 0.5 to 1.5% over the house. A second strategy involves knowing when to double down, split, and surrender. These decisions can make a big difference in how much you win or lose. DOUBLE DOWN: This is done by placing an extra amount of chips next to your original wager, and then the dealer will deal you another card. This is a very profitable option but it may also cause you to over-bet or take too many risks. SPLIT: When you receive two cards of equal value, you have the option to “split” them into two separate hands. You will still play one hand for the round, but you have to place a second wager on each of these new hands. EARLY SURRENDER: In some games, players are able to forfeit half of their wager against a face or ace before the dealer checks for blackjack. This can be beneficial for some hands because it allows them to avoid getting a bad total, especially against the dealer’s high card. RESPONSE: Once the dealer checks for blackjack, the player can either “Hit” or “Stand.” They must stand if their first card is an ace, and they must hit if their first card is a ten or face card. They can also stand if their second card is a ten or face card. STAND: If your first card is an ace, you can choose to “stand.” This means that you do not draw any more cards and will automatically win. This decision will save you money but you can only make this decision if your first card is an ace. CARDS: The cards in a blackjack game are dealt face up. The dealer will then take a look at his cards and decide whether to hit, stand or double down. DOUBLE DOWN: If you feel confident that your hand is going to beat the dealer’s, you can ask for a “double down” bet by putting an extra amount of chips on the table in front of your original wager. This is a good decision, but it must be done carefully. RESPLIT: You can re-split a pair, except for Aces which are only allowed to be split once. This will give you a chance to get multiple bets out against the dealer’s bad card and increase your odds of winning.
