Roulette is a casino game in which the player places chips on a special table and watches as a small ball spins around and eventually comes to rest in one of the compartments marked with numbered red or black numbers. The game emerged in Europe in the 18th century and is now played worldwide. All bets are against the “house,” or casino, and winning bets pay off at varying odds depending on the type of bet placed. The game of Roullete, or ‘little wheel’ in French, is played on a circular table with betting zones that correspond to the different sections of the roulette wheel. A croupier, or dealer, throws a small ball into the wheel while it is spinning and players place their chips on the table until the croupier announces that no more bets can be made. Each wheel is essentially a solid wooden disk slightly convex in shape with a series of metal partitions, or frets, that surround it. Thirty-six of these pockets, painted alternately red and black, are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. On European-style wheels there is a compartment, painted green, that carries the number 0, and on American-style wheels two green pockets carry the numbers 0 and 00. In the past, professional roulette balls were carved from ivory. Today, however, the majority of roulette balls are synthetic materials that resemble ivory in appearance and feel. These new balls are smaller and lighter than their ivorine counterparts, making them jump more unpredictably on the wheel track before coming to rest in a pocket. Several theories of the origins of roulette have been put forward, including that it was invented in the 17th century by Blaise Pascal, a French physicist and philosopher who was also interested in perpetual motion machines. It was a popular game in European casinos until it was banned in France from 1836 to 1933. A game of pure chance, roulette is simple enough for beginners to play and yet has plenty of betting options for experienced players as well. It is a fast-paced and fun game that’s easy to learn and provides a thrilling experience when you win!
