Poker is a card game in which players place bets based on the strength of their hand. The game can be played by two or more people and requires the use of skill and strategy to win. While poker has many variations, there are certain core elements that all forms share. First, the players must make forced bets — either an ante or blind bet — before being dealt cards. The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals them to each player in turn, beginning with the player to his or her right. The cards may be dealt face up or down, depending on the variant of poker being played. Players then have the option to call a bet and compete for the pot, or to fold. In order to raise a bet, the player must match or exceed the stake of the last active player — this is known as raising. If a player declines to raise, or cannot meet the raised stake, they must forfeit their cards and withdraw from the game. Otherwise, they must remain in the pot until a showdown and potentially win the entire prize money.
